Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have experienced “major trauma” or PTSD to come to counselling?

No. Trauma looks different for everyone. You might be struggling with ongoing stress, emotional overwhelm, relationship difficulties, or experiences that still affect you today. You don’t need a specific label to seek support.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is about getting to know you and understanding what’s brought you to counselling. There’s no pressure to share anything you’re not ready for. We’ll talk about what you’d like help with and what feels safe to focus on.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

No. Trauma-informed counselling does not require reliving or retelling traumatic experiences. We work at your pace, focusing on safety, stability, and what feels manageable for  you. If in time you want to address your trauma directly, we will discuss evidenced-based trauma techniques that are designed to help you do this safely and effectively

Do I need a diagnosis to do trauma therapy?

No. We work on reducing your symptoms, you do not need a diagnosis.

How long does counselling last?

This varies from person to person. Some clients come for short-term support, while others prefer longer-term therapy. We can review this together as we go, and you’re always in control of how long you continue.

Is online counselling effective?

Yes. Many people find online counselling just as effective as in-person therapy, especially when it comes to trauma work. It also allows you to attend sessions from a familiar, comfortable space.

Do you offer online counselling?

Yes. I offer online counselling for adults based in the UK and abroad. Sessions take place via a secure video platform, allowing you to access therapy from a space where you feel comfortable.

How long are sessions and how often do we meet?

Sessions last 60 minutes and usually take place weekly, although this can be discussed and adapted to suit your needs.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. Sessions are confidential and follow BACP ethical guidelines. Counselling is also non-judgemental - there is no place for blame, or shame, in the sessions. The opposite is very often true. We will be working on helping you leave blame and shame behind.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. I offer a free initial discussion so you can ask questions, talk about what you’re looking for, and decide whether counselling feels right for you.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in the initial discussion?

No. It's important that I have an idea of what you are looking to discuss and process, but I do not need to know all of the details
